Living Room Furniture - Yes, It's Where We Live

In the last article we went over office furniture. In this articles we're going to cover furniture that's a little more near and dear to our hearts. The furniture in our homes. More specifically we're going to cover the living room in this article since it is usually the main room in everyone's home.

For every room in our home there is furniture to go in it, maybe too much furniture. Then it comes time to move, and unless you hire a professional moving company, you are in for a world of hurt. But moving is not the point of this article.

Probably more marketing is spent on furniture for your living room or recreation room, as some people call it, than for any other room in your house. Why? Probably because we spend more time there than in any other room in our home. For starters, the living room is where the majority of TVs and entertainment centers are located. Living rooms are also usually the largest rooms in our home. So there's lots of furniture made to go in it. Just about every living room in the world has a coffee table in it. Why they call it a coffee table is actually rather strange because ultimately what ends up on the table is everything but coffee. This is where most people throw their mail, magazines, and an assortment of little knickknacks. Coffee tables for the most part are rectangular and made of a variety of materials such as metal, marble, wood and even glass.

Usually to compliment the coffee table are a couple of end tables. For the most part these are used to place lamps so that you're able to see what's on the coffee table. End tables are also made of the same materials as your coffee table and are generally bought in sets.

Then of course there's the places in your living room where you sit. A typical living room will have a couch or sofa, maybe even a hide-a-bed like a Castro Convertible which is a couch that turns into a bed. In addition to the couch you'll have two or more chairs. Depending on how large your living room is you may have enough chairs to seat the starting line up for the New York Yankees baseball team.

To compliment all of the above the finishing touches are usually in the form of some kind of entertainment center. These can be bought ready made but many you need to put together yourself. These centers are used to put your TV, stereo, DVD player and whatever else you may have for entertainment purposes. With the creation of some very large TV screens some of these centers can take up half your living room.

Some other things you might find around the living room are floor lamps, bookcases and various kinds of cabinets and storage furniture.

In the last article of this series we're going to cover the bedroom, kitchen and dining room. The rooms are smaller so there's not as much to throw in them.

And thats what Thomas Lee came up with in 1903, while vacationing with his family in 1903, at Westport, New York. He wanted something comfortable, and suited to the sloping grounds of his cottage. So he went to work with a saw, and a single plank of wood, cutting out only eleven pieces that he assembled into what is now known as the Adirondack chair.

This basic, flat slat chair, usually with a fan shaped back, also tilted slightly in its positioning, to make it suitable to the uneven ground where Lees family spent the summer.

Intrigued by the outcome, and needing a source of winter income, his friend Harry Bunnell patented the chair, and began turning them out in his workshop during the cold months, to sell to the summer population. His creations were all made of hemlock, then painted in dark greens or browns, and signed.

The hallmark of the Adirondack chair, is its wide, flat armrests, supremely comfortable in the many forms of outdoor furniture that are now included as part of the Adirondack style. With the solid wood construction, and adequate coating to protect it against the rain and sun, these bits of Americana will last for years.

Today, the chairs come in a wide variety of colors, and have expanded into love seats, gliders, and other forms of outdoor furniture that are still clearly recognizable by their slat construction, and the standard armrests.

You can choose chairs by color to suit the predominant color in a garden. For example, if youre growing herbs, many of which flower in blues and purples, there are violet Adirondack chairs. Perhaps youd rather have the chairs to match your house trim, in which case there are red, yellow, indigo, and orange models. And of course, you can still get the original green chair.

Artist Joel Sisson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, wanted to make a big thing of Adirondack chairs, and built a gargantuan example and placed it on his front lawn in 1996. The chair was stolen, so he built another. It too, was stolen. To make sure the Adirondack chair didnt disappear into the night forever, Sisson then built 90 of the chairs, and enlisted the help of local high school students to paint them a sea foam green. The chairs were distributed in pairs, to neighbors along a city block, and displayed on their lawns.

In celebration of their successful vanquishing of the chair thieves, Sisson took ten of his students, two giant chairs, and 50 regular sized ones, and hauled them to the National Mall in Georgetown, where the slats were assembled, painted, and put on display. The single giant chair remains there today.

Northern White Cedar is also popular, and provides a lighter, brighter look to your patio sets and swings or loungers. If you acquire plain wood garden furniture and want to finish it, try a single coat of a semi-transparent stain that has sun-screening properties. Otherwise, it can be left to age to a natural silver-gray.

Teak is an extremely durable, tight-grained hardwood, that is not only strong, but extremely attractive, and comes in a range of natural shades. The rubber and natural oil content provide extra protection against fungus that can set in when the wood is wet for prolonged periods. Its so impervious to the weather, that some people leave their garden furniture outside, year-round without covers. Natural teak that is relatively new, has a sheen from the oils released in the cutting of the wood. This disappears after a few days outdoors, and unfinished teak that is left to age, will turn a lovely, silvery-gray color. At that point, it may look as if it needs paint, but paint is not likely to adhere properly, due to the natural oil content of the wood.

Mahogany is more a choice for indoor than garden furniture, but it certainly adds a touch of class to the patio. Known for its strength and weather-resistance, this hardwood produced in the tropics is naturally resistant to rot, insects and fungus. The natural color ranges from a rich, deep brown, all the way up through deep, dark reds and even sometimes to a purplish tinge. There is minimal shrinkage with weathering, and if you choose to put some maintenance work into it, instead of leaving it to weather on its own, try regular applications of a water-repellant.

A little disappointing. Great if you want to make most things with heart shapes in it. I didn't. Good for explaining how you go about putting one together, and a few nice designs. The recipes in the back where odd - a nice idea, and i suppose better than another six pages of a heart shaped patterned trellises. Also a lot of diagrams rather than pictures - Pictures would work better i think - obviously dearer to print though.
