Choosing the Right Garden Furniture

Cedar is a material that many people prefer for both its rustic and down home appeal. A softwood, cedar has the same tannic oils as Chinese oak, which prevents attack by mildew when the wood is consistently wet, deep down. A very durable wood, its estimated to have 80% of the strength of oak, but is a much lighter material, important when it comes to moving chairs or seats for mowing the lawn. Natural Red Cedar is extremely popular, so much so, that it is often reproduced out of other materials, so check and make sure your furniture is real red cedar, and not a look alike. Northern White Cedar is also popular, and provides a lighter, brighter look to your patio sets and swings or loungers. If you acquire plain wood garden furniture and want to finish it, try a single coat of a semi-transparent stain that has sun-screening properties. Otherwise, it can be left to age to a natural silver-gray.

Teak is an extremely durable, tight-grained hardwood, that is not only strong, but extremely attractive, and comes in a range of natural shades. The rubber and natural oil content provide extra protection against fungus that can set in when the wood is wet for prolonged periods. Its so impervious to the weather, that some people leave their garden furniture outside, year-round without covers. Natural teak that is relatively new, has a sheen from the oils released in the cutting of the wood. This disappears after a few days outdoors, and unfinished teak that is left to age, will turn a lovely, silvery-gray color. At that point, it may look as if it needs paint, but paint is not likely to adhere properly, due to the natural oil content of the wood.

Mahogany is more a choice for indoor than garden furniture, but it certainly adds a touch of class to the patio. Known for its strength and weather-resistance, this hardwood produced in the tropics is naturally resistant to rot, insects and fungus. The natural color ranges from a rich, deep brown, all the way up through deep, dark reds and even sometimes to a purplish tinge. There is minimal shrinkage with weathering, and if you choose to put some maintenance work into it, instead of leaving it to weather on its own, try regular applications of a water-repellant.

As far as I know, there is nothing even close to this on the market.

I have had a few of these for many years. None have ever failed. Setup is straightforward and programming is reasonable.

Having the lights automatically adjust for sunrise/sunset is great. If we will be coming home late, we don't need to turn on the front lights before we leave. They will be on when we return.

There is a little bug in the programming. It screws up if it is programmed to turn on before midnight and turn off after midnight. I forget now how it screws up, because I changed mine to turn off just before midnight. Minor problem.

I would like more flexible programming, but that usually comes with complexity. There isn't much space there for a display. My wishlist includes:

1. Be able to set an offset (sunset +/- nn minutes).

2. A random feature where it would vary the actual on/off times by +/- nn minutes.

3. Automatic adjustment for daylight savings. This may be a problem, because the politicians keep dorking around with the the cutover day, so maybe it's better as it is. This also allows me to sych the clock twice a year. Maybe an upgraded model could include a receiver for the time signal from Colorado? :-)

The timer does not keep perfect time, which is surprising. I would think it could use the 60 Hz from the grid to stay perfectly in time like most electric clocks do.

This is one of my favorite gadgets. I am not sure why it is so hard to find.

This good and works with incandescent, halogen or fluorescent others dont so if you want to run energy saver style bulbs this is the one. I only gave it 3 stars as the front panel I feel will break and there is limited programing compared to others and no security (random mode)etc

Customer Review: Mostly happy, but not thrilled with inconsistent product & price

I paid $133 for the 1st of these that I bought, and was very satisfied with the purchase, so I looked into getting another one. I put off my search because within the 2 weeks since my 1st purchase the price had gone over $150. The price came down again to $142, and I really needed the 2nd one so I bought it. Once assembled, it looked fine, but this one was not delivered in good shape as the 1st one was. There were scratches in the surface veneer(looks like it is paper wood?), and a number of the particle board pieces were chipped. Nothing really major worth sending back because of the weight, and not overly visible once everything was assembled, but not as happy with the second, MORE EXPENSIVE, item because of its condition. Assembly was fairly simple, just take your time, follow the directions, and don't try to do this in cramped quarters. 1st purchase was a 5 star for price and quality, 2nd was a 3 star, average it out to a 4 star overall.
